Talkin’ Twins Baseball

Not Good At All

It has just been a series of ups and downs, a roller coaster ride of sorts, for the Twins and their fan base. Today marked another change in perception. You see, things were going pretty well before the Twins went on their 14 game, 15 day road trip. Then they won the first two games in Anaheim and we were sky high! But then over the course of the remaining twelve games of the road trip, they won just three more times. But somehow, they were only two games behind the White Sox because they weren’t playing well. The team would be coming home to face the Tigers and Royals. They won Game 1 against the Tigers, so we were happy again. But then they lost the final two games of that series, both in close games and games they could have and should have won. They had a much needed day off at home on Monday, but they were now 2.5 games back of the ChiSox and things were looking a bit bleak. But then Tuesday happened. The Twins beat the Royals while the Blue Jays swept a double header from the Sox. Again, within one game, and all is well. Wednesday, both teams won again, but the Sox nearly coughed up a big lead! And then today happened…

Yes, I did skip out on work. I did go in for two hours and got a few important things done, but I had to be at the game. I actually met The Twins Geek and Mrs. Twins Geek and went into the game with them, so that was fun. But as for the game, it was nothing but disappointment after disappointment. It’s too bad because Francisco Liriano was excellent again. The lefty gave up single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings, but at one point, he retired 15 Royals hitters in a row. Joe Nathan came in for the 9th inning and struck out the side. But then came the… Dun.Dun.DUN… rest of the bullpen. Matt Guerrier came in and gave up two hits. Neither was hit hard, so there was some bad luck. Dennys Reyes came in to face the left handed David DeJesus, who promptly crushed a single to right field to give the Royals the 3-2 lead. Jesse Crain came in and got the last two outs.

But the offense could do nothing against Joakim Soria, one of the game’s better closers, and the Twins are back to 1.5 games behind the White Sox who play tonight. Who knows? Maybe the Sox lose and the Twins are back to just one game behind… but now the Twins are embarking on a ten game road trip. Everyone talked about the 14 game road trip, but ten games is a lot as well. They have to play the games, but after going 5-9 on a road trip and coming home and going 3-3 there, it’s hard to be terribly optimistic going into the trip.

The Twins had several chances to score more runs. Really, that is where the fault lies. From Carlos Gomez getting fooled on the ‘fake-to-third-throw-to-first’ play that never works to Justin Morneau’s inability to do anything with Joe Mauer at 2B and nobody out in the 8th.

I was at the game. 20,000 Twins fans were pretty lethargic. But the Twins offense was equally lethargic. It’s hard to believe that a team in a pennant race could possibly not get up for a game this important.

On the positive side, Brendan Harris made two terrific defensive plays in the top of the 8th inning that deserve mention. Despite any statistics you want to throw at me, Nick Punto’s range at SS is not very good. Jason Kubel was a step slow in LF. Denard Span let another ball bounce off his glove a couple of steps before he crashed into the baggy. In the first two innings, the Twins had four called strike threes. Delmon Young did not play. I don’t know why. I mean, others are not getting games off. Gardy played the infield in in the 2nd and 3rd innings, which made no sense to me. In the 10th, Gardy brought in Matt Guerrier to face Joey Gathright, Mark Teahen and Alberto Callaspo, then finally brought Dennys Reyes in to face lefty David DeJesus. Gathright is left-handed. Teahen is left-handed. And Callaspo is a slap-hitting switch hitter. That inning called for Reyes to be in there the whole time, and if Reyes isn’t capable of a full inning, then go with Craig Breslow. Obviously I’d prefer to see Jose Mijares.

Speaking of… I got home and just checked out LaVelle’s Game Posting in which he quotes Ron Gardenhire talking about how he wants to get Mijares into a game, “Six runs is not that big of a lead in this league.” Wow… how many games have bigger than a six run lead. We may not see Mijares this year!

Anyway, enough about that game. If you watched or listened to the game, please feel free to comment. I’ll be back later with the Week 2 FB Picks.

  2. Seth, do you have bad luck or something? Every time you go to a game they lose. Kidding of course. What you just described in your post is the definition of baseball. Things can change so quickly. I’m definitely pulling for this team but am not too high on them right now. Mainly just their bullpen. Can’t wait for the calls for “Why didn’t Gardy give Nathan another inning?” This bullpen is just shaky, that’s all I can say. Pick your poison, Crain or Guerrier? Personally if it was me, I wouldn’t put Mijares in either unless it was a 7 or 8 run lead. 6 is not enough. You saw what happened to the White Sox last night. With this bullpen if he gives up a couple base runners and they go to someone else, all heck could break lose. I totally agree with his thinking there. I’d like to see him pitch but not in a meaningful game in a pennant race and that is every game right now. This team will be fine, today’s loss was tough but they will be fine. They won the series and they need to continue to do that. With the way their starters are throwing they have a chance in every game and that is all we can ask for down the stretch. I will admit that it would be nice to start winning some of these close extra inning games, when’s the last time one of them went our way? Again, if you have a weak bullpen that is when it shows the most. Don’t take this as being negative, I’m still very optimistic about the Twins chances.

  3. Those 5-6 run collapses by the bullpen have occurred with some from the current bullpen. I guess I’ll take my chances with that kind of lead with someone new. Gotta find out what he can do. I’m certain that 98.7% of the time, Mijares would leave a game he came into with a 6 run lead with a five or six run lead still.

  4. No surprise statement: why can’t Nathan pitch more than 1 inning? Why can’t we see some young guys in important situations? Not a fan, at all, of how Gardy managed this game. Not one bit.

  5. He’s never pitched in the majors, so let’s put him into a tie game in extra innings in the middle of a pennant race. What could happen? Nothing except maybe he could go all Rick Ankiel on us and walk every batter. I agree though that a lefty should have started the 10th. Honestly, the one thing Gardy does that really bugs me is pull out his starters before they’ve even gotten to 100 pitches. Liriano was cruising. Give him the 9th, then Nathan can pitch the 10th (or go to a lefty for the bottom of the order) and hopefully the Twins could score against a different reliever in the 10th.

Seth, do you really believe the Twins “weren’t up” for a game in September in a pennant race. That’s not even remotely possible. If anything, they were too amped, especially late in the game. This is why it can be very difficult to play teams out of the race in September, because they have no pressure on them but they like to beat the good teams so they can feel like they are a part of the pennant race (remember the Tigers getting swept by the Royals in Detroit the final week of the 2006 season)?

This game was disappointing, but it’s not fair to expect a team to sweep every series. I don’t consider it going down on the roller coaster considering how long it had been since they had won any series. Now, if they lose the series to the Orioles, that’s a different story. The important thing is the Twins are still one game back. You definitely can’t look past tomorrow this time of the year. All the matters right now is tomorrow’s game.

  6. I’m not saying that Mijares should have pitched today… definitely not… But certainly when the team had a 6 run lead in the 9th the night before made sense.

  7. Great comments SoCal, I 100% agree with you. I can’t disagree on Liriano, but they do have to be somewhat careful with him because of the injury factor. I wouldn’t have been opposed to giving him another inning though. We all know we wanted a sweep but we need to keep in perspective that we won the series and played very well the first 2 games. In my mind, this game didn’t come down to pitching. We just didn’t get the big hits late in the game. i.e. Mauer getting to 2nd in the 8th with nobody out. Let’s stay positive guys, we still have a really, really good shot at winning this division. We all say that we should have some fun with this but then we always get so upset over one loss to the Royals, stay calm, things we’ll be fine. Sometimes I actually find blogs comical. Agreed, we need to win the series here in Baltimore, Cabrera seems to always pitch well against the Twins. I hope they are patient with him, if they are they will be fine.

  8. In fairness to the Twins, regarding the called strikeouts, many of those early called strikes were _NOT_ strikes. It was a really wide zone. I didn’t watch the second half of the game to closely, but early on the ump was pretty much calling anything between the two batter’s boxes a strike.

  9. That was a Charlie Reliford crew with Brian Runge behind the plate, which is a pretty good explanation for the terribly wide strike zone.

  11. amazing how poor umpiring is these days…….
    all with different strike zones…
and the calls on the opposite side of the plate from which they hold their head over the catcher (always the “inside” of the plate)…. makes the calls outside soooooo generous… sometimes up to a foot it seems….

i am getting very ambivalent about whether the twins even deserve to play in the playoffs. if they had just played .500 baseball from when they were 20 games over .500, they would be 2 games up. but they choked sooooo many games away…. they had being 5 games up by now in their grasp! if a team can’t even play .500 baseball the last month of the season….

and as good as the numbers appear for average w runners in scoring position… talk about clutch double plays and strikeouts by the m & m boys, and kubel, and young, and nicky… not necessarily with a lead and no pressure… but when the game is on the line…….
my throat hurts from choking with them so much.

if we have to watch who doesn’t lose the central between the twins and white sox, instead of who wins it…. it will be pathetic no matter who wins it.

  13. h2oface….think of the Tigers in ‘06. They were brutal the last month and made the World Series. What matters is making the playoffs and seeing what happens once you get there. Seth has said it before, if you get in anything can happen. We just need to find a way. Agree it is frustrating this team has lost some tough games they shouldn’t have but saying that they have no shot if they get there is not true.
