Report: Neshek to have Tommy John Surgery
A source close to the situation told me that Pat Neshek will indeed have Tommy John surgery. It will likely take place next week.
Interestingly, the ligament that he partially tore in May looked really good. Unfortunately, he tore the other side of the ligament, right off the bone. I can only imagine the pain and discomfort that must cause.
The doctor told him that he will miss the entire 2009 season, but that he should recover completely. Like I wrote last night, this gives him a full 16 months before Spring Training 2010.
I’m certain that Pat is disappointed with this development, but at the same time, he can now focus on the surgery and a full rehabilitation.
I was also told that “he is bummed he will miss the last year in the Metrodome.”
To Pat and his family, obviously we wish you the best through this time and through the recovery.

That sucks for Pat and the Twins. I wonder does this mean we are one of the teams talking to the Rox about Huston Street?
Wow. These last few days have lowered my mood quite a bit. While this is obviously a huge loss, can we think of any positives?
-More time for Neshek to return to 100%
-The emergence of Jose Mijares?
Any more?
A better chance to keep both Boof and Humber on the 25 man? Is that a good thing?
Here’s my take. A bullpen of Humber, Guerrier, Bonser, Breslow, Crain, Mijares, and Nathan doesn’t sound too bad to me as long as Bonser and Mijares pitch like we think they are capable of. Humber would be the long man, and then we just have to hope Guerrier comes back as the 2006-2007 version. It seems like we are counting on a lot of things going right in that scenario, but I like to be optimistic. Neshek will certainly be missed, but there’s no need to panic (yet).
Do we for offer Reyes arbitration now for sure? Not only does it shore up the bull pen with an effective arm but it also gets us the draft pick if he signs somewhere else (which might be the better end-play).
Anyways, as far as him shoring up the bullpen it only helps if he stays the LOOGY and either Breslow, Bonser, or Mijares turns out to be a full-inning set up man. Chances of that?
Mijares has shown glimpses that he has the potential to be a set-up guy.
Bonser has the stuff to be a great set up guy; it’s a matter of getting it in his head that he can be that.
Guerrier was set-up material in 2007, then something happened last year
Crain another year removed from surgery could potentially be better (and get better bite on his slider and more movement on his fastball with a stronger shoulder).
There are a lot of options; no need to panic. Just hope that Pat comes out ok from all of this

Do we for offer Reyes arbitration now for sure?
I think it was always a given the Twins would offer him arbitration. The question is how hard they try to sign him. I think its clear the Twins need to add some bullpen help.
Why do we want 3 LHP in the pen? Smith needs to go out and get a power set up man…….do you hear Houston Street coming down the road? Cudyer, Perkins & AA pitcher for Atkins & Street would make this club a lot better IMO.
[...] Star-Tribune, the Twins might have interest in Colorado reliever Huston Street. With the news that Pat Neshek will need Tommy John surgery, you have to figure the Twins will bring in a reliever or two. Given the Twins’ rumored interest in [...]
