Wednesday Game Reports

29 Apr

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

Nick Blackburn took the mound for the 2nd inning with a four run lead. That has to be encouraging. The Twins took advantage of the wildness of Scott Kazmir, even scoring two runs on wild pitches in the 1st inning to grab a 4-0 lead. The top of the order got the job done. Denard Span, Brendan Harris and Justin Morneau each had three hits. Morneau also had a double and walked once. Michael Cuddyer was 1-2 with two walks.

Blackburn gave up two run on eight hits and a walk in seven innings for his second win. Craig Breslow pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Luis Ayala gave up a run in the 9th.

The Twins won the game 8-3, and they won the series two games to one.  They will now enjoy another off day on Thursday before starting a three game series against the Kansas City Royals. They will miss Zach Greinke this time around!

PROGRAMMING NOTE –

So, what do the players do on their days off? I can’t answer that with any certainty, however, I do know what Twins lefty starter Glen Perkins will be doing on Thursday night. At 10:00, he will be joining me, and we will be co-hosting the www.MNGameNight.com podcast. We will discuss the start to his season, the Twins/Rays series, and the upcoming Royals series, and more. The half-hour show should be really good, so check it out live if you are able. If not, be certain to download it later and listen to it when you have a chance.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT

ROCHESTER REPORT

Wednesday – Rochester 1, Buffalo 0 – Kevin Mulvey and three relievers combined to shutout the Bison in this game. Mulvey went the first 5.2 innings. He gave up four hits, walked two and struck out seven. Mike Gosling got the win to improve to 3-0 on the young season. He gave up two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. Bobby Keppel threw a perfect inning. Sean Henn got his first save with a scoreless ninth. Jason Pridie led the offense by going 2-3 with his third double. He scored the lone run on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Martin, who was 1-2.

ROCKCAT RECAP

Wednesday – New Britain 0, New Hampshire 5 Ryan Mullins falls to 0-4 after this loss, but his offense did nothing for him. The lefty went 4.2 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out six. Zach Ward went the next 2.1 innings and gave up a run. He struck out three. Yohan Pino pitched a scoreless inning. The Rockcat bats managed just five hits. Steve Tolleson went 1-3 with a walk and his first stolen base.

MIRACLE MEMOS

Wednesday –Ft. Myers 5, Palm Beach 1Michael McCardell was the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week last week. He made a case for this week’s award with this morning’s outing. The righty improved to 2-2 with seven strong innings. He gave up a run on five hits. He walked none and struck out four. Santos Arias threw two scoreless innings in relief. Mark Dolenc went 3-4 with his third stolen base. Ben Revere went 3-5 with his 11th stolen base.

SNAPPERS SNIPPETS

Wednesday – Beloit 1, Dayton 2 – The Snappers managed just two hits in this game. Evan Bigley had a double, and Nick Romero had a single. Brad Tippett started for the team and gave up one run on three hits and a walk in 5.1 innings. Henry Reyes gave up the other run to take the loss. He gave up the run on five hits over 2.2 innings. Danny Rondon gave up just a hit in his inning.  Travis from Travis Talks informed me that the Snappers best hitter to this point in the season, Ramon Santana, went on the Disabled List with a sprained ankle.

Redmond Shoulder Hurting?

29 Apr

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

It is being stressed by the Twins announcers throughout this game that Mike Redmond hasn’t played in a couple of days due to a sore shoulder.

Anyone else think “Sore Shoulder” is code word for “We need to make a roster move after this game, Morales is playing great, we don’t want to send other people down, so we are going to put Redmond on the Disabled List retroactive to his last game played, so that in a week or so when Jose Morales comes back down to earth, we can send him down to Rochester at that time, rather than now?”

In reality, it is very smart strategy. Here are the options to be involved in a transaction to bring back Joe Mauer:

Jose Morales – I don’t think anyone wants to send Jose Morales to the minor leagues right now. He is one of the Twins top two or three hitters right now. That will not be maintained. He still needs to work on his defense, but is no longer completely inept. Morales could catch some, but at this point, he could serve as the DH with Jason Kubel getting more time in the OF.

Mike Redmond – I have read some people say that the Twins should release Redmond completely. That is the worst idea yet. Again, if he were to be released, he would be picked up nearly immediately. Then what happens when Morales inevitable regresses, or even worse, if Mauer needed to spend more time on the disabled list. Are you comfortable with Morales and Butera as the Twins catchers?

Brian Buscher – He’s barely playing now. He can play 1B and 3B as well as DH and pinch hit. The Twins have other options for each of those positions. Buscher has options remaining.

Carlos Gomez – World of talent, just really can’t hit right now. He needs to play every day, and over the last week to ten days, he has not played much for the Twins (even before he went to Florida to be with his wife during the birth of their first child. Sending Gomez down makes complete sense on so many levels.

What will (probably) happen? I think that after the game the Twins will announce that Joe Mauer is being activated and Mike Redmond is being put on the Disabled List.

What should happen? The Twins should activate Joe Mauer and put Mike Redmond on the Disabled List. AND they should option Carlos Gomez to Rochester and promote Jason Pridie to the Twins.

What do you think? Comment here.

Playing a Little Extra

28 Apr

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

Francisco Liriano started and gave up two runs over the first seven innings. Jose Mijares pitched a scoreless eighth innings. Joe Nathan came on to protect the 3-2 lead, and the Twins win… Wait! I guess it wasn’t quite that simple, was it? Nathan’s first pitch of the ninth inning was deposited over the baggy in right centerfield by Ben Zobrist to tie the game at three. But in the bottom of the ninth, Jose Morales singled and advanced to second base on a Nick Punto bunt. Denard Span advanced Morales to 3B with an infield single. Brendan Harris batted (against lefty JP Howell) for Alexi Casilla and after falling behind 0-2 worked a walk to load the bases for Justin Morneau. The Rays pulled Zobrist into the infield for a five-infielder set. I honestly have never seen that work at all, but on this day, it almost did. Morneau drilled a liner to 2B, who threw to second for the force out, but Morneau really hustled down the line and beat the return throw to first base. That scored Morales with the game winning run.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Morneau hit a two run home run that gave the Twins a 2-0 lead.

For more thoughts on the game itself, I hosted a Live Chat throughout the game, so you can read my thoughts on the game, some of the plays and decisions throughout it, and plenty of other topics on the Twins game and their minor leagues.

The big league club had to work an extra half-inning to get their win. Check below because two of the three Twins affiliates that played tonight had to work extra innings in their games.

SethSpeaks.net Live Game Chat Tonight at 7:15

28 Apr

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

I haven’t had a live chat for awhile, so I thought a live game chat would make a lot of sense tonight (at 7:15 central time). There are plenty of Twins topics that can be discussed, major league and minor league, and we can talk about whatever you like.  I will open up the chat room 15-20 minutes before show time.

Monday Night Game Notes

27 Apr

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

The Twins lost 7-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. Scott Baker was certainly better, but four runs in six innings is far from great. That said, I thought he looked significantly better than he had in his first two starts. So that is a positive. If you are looking for a positive, the Twins are 9-11, and Baker and Francisco Liriano are a combined 0-7. Think about that for a minute. When the team’s top two starting pitchers do not start, the team is 9-4. In a strange way, that is reason for some optimism. The Twins managed just five hits in the game off of Jeff Niemann, who like former college teammate Philip Humber is out of options, and that solid Rays bullpen. Alexi Casilla and Michael Cuddyer each walked twice. Denard Span stole two bases. The lone highlight of the game for the Twins was the third home run of Joe Crede’s season.

The other highlight for me was getting to see Juan Morillo. He gave up a solo home run in the 9th inning to Jason Bartlett, but I don’t care about that. That made the end score 7-1 instead of 6-1. What I like, as everyone does, is the consistency of fastballs over 95 mph. If he can hone the control of that pitch in a couple of months with Rick Anderson, and then find a second pitch during the 2009 season, he could be special. Am I the only one who is excited about a 2010 bullpen that could include Jose Mijares, Juan Morillo, Jesse Crain, Pat Neshek, Rob Delaney and Anthony Slama setting up Joe Nathan. And maybe Boof Bonser will be back in that picture too. That is pretty exciting.

At 9:00 central time last night, the SethSpeaks.net Weekly Minnesota Twins podcast began. The guests on the show were Tyler Hissey of the MVN’s Around the Majors blog. We talked a bunch about the Rays and the Twins and this series. In the show’s second half, KFAN’s Phil Mackey, who writes a great blog at PhilMackey.com, as well as a new one at MNPokerMag.com came on and we talked Twins topics. We also discussed the Vikings draft a little bit. I think it was a solid show, so I hope you will check it out and then send me your feedback. What would you like from the show? And then be sure to check out Sunday night’s MNGameNight.com podcast, which the Twins Geek and I both thought was pretty strong. Again, your feedback is very important to us.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT

ROCHESTER REPORT

Monday – Rochester 2, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 7 – Jason Jones started and gave up three runs (2 earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out six. Ben Julianel came in and gave up four runs on seven hits over the final 2.1 innings. He struck out three, but two of the hits were home runs. Jason Pridie went 2-5 with his second double. Matt Tolbert went 2-4 to raise his average to .206. Dustin Martin was also 2-4, and Trevor Plouffe went 2-3.

ROCKCAT RECAP

Monday – New Britain – No Game Scheduled.

MIRACLE MEMOS

Monday –Ft. Myers 4, Palm Beach 3 (10 innings)Chris Cates singled in Danny Berg, who was hit by a pitch, with the winning run. Of course, what everyone wants to know about this game is that Joe Mauer went 1-2 with two walks. He caught the first seven innings again. Miracle radio man Zach Spears informed me that Mauer had to really run to score from second on a single, but he did. Deibinson Romero went 2-5. David Bromberg started and gave up two runs (1 earned) on three hits and two walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out five. Steve Hirschfeld and Spencer Steedley threw 3.1 shutout relief innings. Kyle Waldrop pitched the final two innings of scoreless ball to get the win.

SNAPPERS SNIPPETS

Monday – Beloit 6, Kane County 10Ramon Santana continues his torrid start. In this game, the SS went 3-4 with his fifth double and two RBI. Dan Osterbock made the start and in five innings, he gave up five runs (3 earned). He gave up five hits (including two home runs), a walk and struck out four. Bruce Pugh got the loss. He gave up three runs on one hit and three walks in 1.2 innings. Matt Williams then gave up two runs on four hits and two walks in the final 1.1 innings. This team has a long ways to go on defense. Nick Romero, who has been splitting time between 3B and SS, committed his sixth error. Eli Tintor, who has not caught in about two years, is back with Beloit and back behind the plate. In this game, he had three passed balls.

I’ll be back in a little bit with another posting. Enjoy your Tuesday!  Send me an e-mail, or leave your questions or comments here.

Live Twins Podcast Tonight at 9!

27 Apr

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

Tonight is the first Monday night episode of the SethSpeaks.net Weekly Minnesota Twins podcast. Although I am still waiting for confirmation from a third guest, I can tell you that Tyler Hissey, a Tampa Bay Rays blogger at Around the Majors on MVN, will be one of the guests. We’ll talk about this three game series with the Rays and more. Also, KFAN’s Phil Mackey, who also writes an excellent blog at PhilMackey.com, which includes his personal 2009 projections, will be on to Talk Twins, and we may even dive into that NFL draft thing that he put a ton of hours into. Would he have drafted Percy Harvin?  There will be a chat room open, and a call in number, so please tune in live, if you’re able, or be sure to download it and listen to it tomorrow.

Weekend Updates

27 Apr

Welcome back to the work week. I am happy to report that after a week away, I am back home so hopefully, for the readers of this site and any of my other blogs, there should be a return to normalcy. This blog posting will take a look back at the weekend. The Twins won two out of three games in Cleveland. There were certainly some interesting performances at each of the Twins minor league affiliates. Joe Mauer played three games for the Ft. Myers Miracle. The Rochester Red Wings played a game with a football score on Saturday. Shooter Hunt was back on the mound, which has become a story in itself.

To hear more about the weekend series and look forward to the upcoming home series against Tampa Bay, be sure to tune in to the MNGameNight.com podcast. I joined The Twins Geek and Kyle Eliason to do the show. Instead of doing it over the phone, he set up a studio with cool MacGyver-like microphones, a sound board, and several retakes. But it was a lot of fun, and having listened to the podcast a couple of times, I think it turned out quite well. So please, check it out, listen to it, and then e-mail me any comments that you may have on it.

Speaking of podcasts, be sure to check out the SethSpeaks.net Weekly Minnesota Twins podcast tonight at 9:00 p.m. central time. Please note that this is a change as previously I had been posting on Tuesday nights. I am looking forward to this change because Mondays are more frequently off days for the Twins and their affiliates. I do have a couple of confirmed guests for the show. I’ll try to send out a schedule tomorrow afternoon. Be sure to click on the link and set up the RSS Feed for the show.

One other topic for discussion is the Minnesota Vikings selection of Percy Harvin, a WR type from Florida, in the first round (22nd overall) despite reports that he is not one of the best people in the world. However, he can be a dynamic, impact player for the Vikings if he can stay healthy and stay out of trouble. The obvious comparison there is to Randy Moss, who the Vikings were thrilled to take later in the first round. He certainly became an impact player, if not the best WR in NFL history. Some people are trying to force the comparison between Harvin and Twins reliever Jose Mijares. I don’t really get the comp. Yes, they both have some off field issues they needed to address, but for Mijares those were work and worth ethic. For Harvin, those off field problems are legal problems (like failing a drug test at the combine. For Mijares, it has been probably like weight control and composure. So, let me ask this, when is the last time that the Twins signed or drafted a guy with a questionable history. Have there been any?

FRIDAY – TWINS 5, CLEVELAND 1

SATURDAY – TWINS 7, CLEVELAND 1

SUNDAY – TWINS 2, CLEVELAND 4

Before the season, most people thought these were the two teams that would challenge for the AL Central crown. They may still be, but when the series started, they were the bottom two teams in the division. The Twins got two out of three games this weekend. On the road, you have to be thrilled with that.

Here are a few other thoughts from the series:

·         Nick Blackburn pitched well. He gave up one run in seven innings on Friday night.

·         Kevin Slowey pitched excellent. He threw eight shutout innings on Saturday and fully took advantage of a larger strike zone. He was allowed to go out to the mound for the 9th inning, in an attempt to get a shutout, but three soft singles loaded the bases and Luis Ayala came in to finish the game.

·         Joe Crede began the series with a .167 batting average. He went 4-12 in the series, with a home run, to raise his average to .204. That’s still not good, but his defense remains excellent, and although he won’t hit for my batting average, he should hit for some power as the season moves forward. The funny thing is that some fans have already given up on Crede. If that is the case, imagine if the Twins had traded for Mark Derosa. The Cleveland utility player went 0-3 on Sunday to drop his season batting average to .195. Their averages are about the same, but Crede’s defense is significantly better, so I would say that the Twins made the right decision.

·         Jose Morales started in the Friday and Sunday games. Not only did he go 2-4 Friday and 4-4 Sunday, but he also threw out his first would-be base stealer, the aforementioned Mark Derosa. I have been asked several times if I think that the Twins should keep Morales up in the big leagues when Joe Mauer comes back. That answer is easy. Of course not, he should go to Rochester and play. Mike Redmond has earned his role on this team over the last three or four seasons. He has an adequate bat (.300 from a backup catcher is just fine!) He has just 31 at bats so far this season, so his .226 batting average would be nearly .300 with just two more hits. Defensively, he is yet to throw anyone out, but he will come around. Also, he does a very good job of game calling. Again, Morales can hit a little bit. As a big leaguer, he will hit for a little average, won’t take many walks and won’t show any power. He could be an adequate backup. But he does have options, Redmond is on the roster and deserves to be, and we will see him again. The bigger questions regarding the catching position comes after the season when the Twins need to determine if they want Mike Redmond on the roster to open Target Field, and where Jose Morales’s defense is, where Drew Butera’s offense is, and how much Wilson Ramos still needs to do.

·         Jason Kubel continues to impress. On Saturday, he went 3-5 with two home runs in the Twins win. The big question for Twins fans should be, who will lead the Twins in Home Runs in 2009, Justin Morneau or Jason Kubel?

·         If 22 year old Carlos Gomez isn’t going to play every day (and he shouldn’t), shouldn’t he be playing every day at Rochester? Doesn’t that just make sense?

·         The Twins much maligned bullpen worked six shutout innings over the three game series.

·         The Twins will now send Scott Baker, Francisco Liriano and Nick Blackburn to the Metrodome’s mound this week to face Jeff Niemann, James Shields and Scott Kazmir.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT

With that, here are the reports on the Twins minor league games from the weekend along with a few other notes:

·         By the way, this is something that just needs to be recognized:

1.      Rob Delaney 2009 – 9 games, 13.1 innings, 12 hits, 0 walks, 19 strikeouts.

2.      Anthony Slama 2009 – 7 games, 7.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks, 15 strikeouts.

3.      I think all those veterans at Rochester should start filling out their resumes.

·         On the polar opposite side of the spectrum are a couple of stories:

1.      First, it was reported on Friday that Twins minor leaguer Hank Sanchez, supplemental first round pick in 2005, was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a drug of abuse. Sanchez was supposed to be providing right handed power for the Twins organization, but he has been hurt most of his professional career, and when he has been healthy, he has struck out a ton.

2.      The Twins second first round pick last year, Shooter Hunt, pitched again on Sunday afternoon. See how well he threw in the game report below. Here are his complete season stats to this point. He has pitched in 11.2 innings over four starts. He has walked 23 and struck out ten! Not good.

·         Be sure to read up on two Twins prospects that had high expectations, didn’t pan out as anticipated, and have started this season very strong. The article by cmathewson is at Twinkie Town.

·         Also, be sure to check out Roger’s Weekly Twins Minor League report from this weekend.

ROCHESTER REPORT

Friday – Rochester 2, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 6 – Anthony Swarzak was the tough-luck loser again in this game. He fell to 0-3 with just a 1.59 ERA. Swarzak gave up two runs on five hits and an intentional walk in six innings. Sean Henn struck out two in his scoreless innings. Bobby Keppel then gave up four runs on six hits in just 0.2 innings. Mike Gosling came in and struck out the lone batter he faced to get out of that 8th inning. Carmen Pignatiello struck out two in his scoreless ninth inning. Trevor Plouffe went 2-4 with his third double.

Saturday – Rochester 14, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 17 (13 innings) – The Barons kicked that 13th inning field goal to win this one. What a game. Each team scored one run in the 10th, the 11th and the 12th innings before the game-deciding 13th inning. Reid Santos started and in 4.2 innings, he gave up six runs on six hits and four walks. Ben Julianel gave up an unearned run on a hit in 0.1 innings. Mike Gosling gave up two runs in 2.1 innings. He struck out five. Sean Henn gave up two unearned runs in 1.2 innings. Armando Gabino gave up three runs on five hits and a walk in his three innings. Carmen Pignatiello gave up three runs in the 13th. The bats definitely did their part in this game. Brock Peterson went 3-6 with a walk, two doubles and his first home run. Luke Hughes went 3-6 with a walk, a triple, and two home runs. Matt Macri went 2-7 with his second and third home runs. Dustin Martin was 3-7 with a double. Drew Butera went 2-3 with two walks. Justin Huber made his Red Wings debut and went 2-2 with a double and a home run before getting hurt. He has a sore hamstring that will keep him out of action. To activate him, Tommy Watkins went on the seven-day DL with a “sore hamstring.”

Sunday – Rochester 7, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 3 – As you would imagine, after Saturday’s game, the Red Wings needed some solid pitching, and they got it. Brian Duensing started and gave up three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out six. Philip Humber made his first appearance since clearing waivers. He threw two scoreless innings. Bobby Keppel threw two shutout frames. Alejandro Machado went 2-3 with a walk. David Winfree and Jeff Christy each had a double and two RBI.

ROCKCAT RECAP

Friday – New Britain 3, Trenton 6Danny Valencia is on fire. In this game, he went 3-4 with his second double and first triple. Wilson Ramos went 2-4. Yancarlos Ortiz went 2-5. Cole Devries started and gave up two runs on three hits and three walks in 4.2 innings. Jose Lugo gave up three runs on three hits. Rob Delaney struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings. Zach Ward gave up an unearned run on one hit in his inning.

Saturday – New Britain 5, Trenton 1Matthew Fox got his first win of the 2009 season. He started and threw seven shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out five. Rob Delaney then gave up a run on two hits in one inning. Anthony Slama struck out the side in the ninth. Rene Tosoni and Toby Gardenhire each went 2-4. Whit Robbins had a double with three RBI.

Sunday – New Britain 11, Trenton 3Jeff Manship finally got some run support and recorded his first win of the season. He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings. Jose Lugo, Frank Mata and Yohan Pino each threw a scoreless inning of relief. Danny Valencia was a single short of the cycle. He hit his third double, second triple and second home run. Juan Portes had two doubles in five at bats. Rene Tosoni went 2-5 with his third home run and three RBI. Wilson Ramos went 2-4 with his second double. Matt Moses went 2-4 with a walk and his third double. Yancarlos Ortiz went 2-4.

MIRACLE MEMOS

So as not to overplay it within each game report, Joe Mauer did play in all three games for the Miracle. He caught Friday night and Saturday night, and he was the DH on Sunday night. What he does at the plate isn’t important, in my mind. He will be just fine with the bat. It is good to see how well he worked with the Miracle pitchers. Be sure to specifically note how well the Miracle starts performed Friday and Saturday, and ask yourself if you think Mauer had anything to do with that.

Friday –Ft. Myers 3, Jupiter 1Michael McCardell did not pitch well in his first two starts, so it was great to see him pitch well in this game. The big righty gave up just one hit and one walk in six innings. He struck out six. Kyle Waldrop gave up two hits, but no runs, in his inning. Blair Erickson gave up a run on a hit and a walk in 1.2 innings. Spencer Steedley got the final out and recorded his first save of the season. Joe Mauer went 2-4 with a double and two RBI. Chris Parmelee went 2-4 with the other RBI.

Saturday –Ft. Myers 1, Jupiter 2 (10 innings)Carlos Gutierrez showed exactly what he could be as a starting pitcher in this game. In seven innings, he gave up just one unearned run on two hits. He walked none and struck out just one. In seven innings, he needed just 73 pitches. He coaxed 17 ground outs, and three fly outs in the game. Henry Arias walked two and struck out two in his inning. Alex Burnett pitched a scoreless ninth before giving up an unearned run in the 10th for the loss. Joe Benson went 2-5 with his third double. Joe Mauer went 0-3.

Sunday –Ft. Myers 1, Jupiter 5Deolis Guerra was putting together another solid performance, until the 6th inning. He gave up five runs on six hits and two walks in six innings. Through five, he had given up just two runs on two hits. Santos Arias struck out three in this two scoreless innings. Joe Mauer and Chris Cates went 2-4. Estarlin de Los Santos went 2-5.

SNAPPERS SNIPPETS

Friday – Beloit 7, Quad Cities 5Alexander Soto was the story in this game. The catcher went 4-4 with his third double and second home run. Ozzie Lewis went 3-4. Ramon Santana went 2-3 with a walk. Henry Reyes made the start and it didn’t go so well. He gave up five runs on five hits and two walks in just four innings. He struck out five. Danny Rondon struck out two in his three innings. Bruce Pugh gave up two hits and a walk in 1.2 scoreless innings. Matt Williams came in and got the final out.

Saturday – Beloit, Kane County – Postponed by Rain.

Sunday – Game 1 – Beloit 6, Kane County 11Michael Allen was a sleeper pick for many this past offseason. This was not a good start. In just 1.1 innings, he gave up eight runs (7 earned) on seven hits, a walk and a hit batter. Dan Belind came in and gave up three runs (2 earned) on three hits in 3.2 innings. Joe Testa struck out two in his inning of work. Nick Romero went 3-3 with his second homer and four RBI in the game. Ramon Santana went 2-3 with a walk and his third double. Ozzie Lewis went 2-4 with an RBI.

Sunday – Game 2 – Beloit 7, Kane County 8 – Let’s be honest… when Shooter Hunt pitches, people take notice. It’s that whole “train wreck” thing. In this game, Hunt gave up four runs on one hit, six walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches in just two innings. Steve Blevins then gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in two innings. Danny Rondon then struck out three, but walked three, in two innings. Nick Romero went 2-2 with a walk and two RBI. Ramon Santana went 2-3 with his fourth double. Evan Bigley went 2-4.

That is it for today. Enjoy your week!  Send me an e-mail, or leave your questions or comments here.

Good Friday Morning to all. This has been a strange baseball week. After playing for fourteen straight days, the Twins had an off day on Monday, were rained out Tuesday, played two games on Wednesday and had another day off on Thursday. One day of games out of four. Hopefully the weather in Cleveland this weekend is good so that we can watch three games on three days! The Twins will send Nick Blackburn, Kevin Slowey and Glen Perkins to the mound to face Fausto Carmona, Carl Pavano and Aaron Laffey. These were the two teams most people picked to win the AL Central, and maybe both teams will be there at the end of the season, but right now, they are at the bottom of the division.

·      The big news to come out on Thursday was that, barring any setbacks, Joe Mauer will begin an official rehab assignment with the Ft. Myers Miracle on Friday, and he will be back with the Twins on May 1. That is great news for the Twins and their fans. Getting Mauer back and putting him into the middle of the lineup should really stabilize the lineup. But more importantly, having Mauer back should stabilize the Twins pitching staff. Last year, he really appeared to have a strong rapport with the Twins starters, so I have to believe that performances should improve. Nothing against Mike Redmond, he is a solid backup, but he is not a starter. I don’t necessarily think that Jose Morales is starter material either. As important, opponents will not be able to run as easily as they have the first several weeks of the season.

·      Forbes values the Minnesota Twins’ at $356 million. That is a 9% increase from last year. The magazine also put the Twins revenue at $158 million. So, if you believe that a team should spend about 52% of its revenues on salaries, the Twins should be spending about $82 million. With the $2.6 million they are paying Mike Lamb in 2009, their Opening Day salaries are listed (by Cot’s Contracts) at $65.9 million. Certainly their revenues will not increase in 2009, and when the Opening Day roster salaries are finalized a year from now, the Twins are likely to be over $80 million.

·      In case you missed it yesterday, Parker Hageman of Over the Baggy, wrote a great article called Award Context: Tony Oliva’s 1964 Rookie of the Year for BaseballDigest.com.

·      Kelsie Smith of the Pioneer Press wrote a nice article on the maturity level of Glen Perkins and how it has made him a better pitcher.

·      Be sure to listen to John Bonnes, The Twins Geek, on last night’s MNGameNight.com podcast. He has two very special guests, and they covered the whole half-hour show, plus nearly another half hour, so you’ll certainly want to listen to it.

·      Rochester Red Wings – No Game Scheduled. But be sure to check out www.CoryHepola.com, the blog of Cory Hepola, a Perham, MN, native who is now a sports anchor/reporter for WROC in Rochester, NY. You will certainly want to check out his Get to Know ‘Em series of videos that most recently have been on OF Jason Pridie and Red Wings President Naomi Silver.

·      New Britain 1, Trenton 4 – The Rockcats managed just two hits in this game. Wilson Ramos hit his first double. Ryan Mullins gave up four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out five. Frank Mata struck out four in 1.2 innings. Yohan Pino struck out two in a perfect inning.

·      Ft. Myers 8, Palm Beach 0 – Tyler Robertson is back. He threw five shutout innings. He gave up five hits and a walk while striking out five. Steve Hirschfeld struck out four in two shutout innings. Alex Burnett struck out three in two perfect innings. Deibinson Romero went 2-3 with a walk. Ben Revere went 2-5 with his sixth and seventh stolen bases. Estarlin de Los Santos went 2-5 with his second triple. Rene Leveret was 1-2 with two walks, his first homer and three RBI.

·      Beloit 7, Quad Cities 4 – Bobby Lanigan got his first win of the season. He gave up four runs on six hits and a walk in 6.2 innings. He struck out ten. Steve Blevins went 1.2 scoreless innings. Joe Testa got the final two outs. Nick Romero went 2-4 with his first double. Adan Severino went 2-4 with a stolen base. Dominic de La Osa went 2-5.

Off Day Notes

Wednesday was not a good day for the Twins. They got pretty well destroyed by the Boston Red Sox in two games. The first game was a rain-shortened 10-1 loss in which Scott Baker gave up a two-run homer in each of the first three innings. They also lost the second game, 7-3, and Francisco Liriano lasted just four innings and gave up all seven runs. The big hit was a three run homer by Jeff Bailey, who if I recall correctly hit a couple off of Liriano last year in Pawtucket. Justin Morneau did hit a home run, so that’s good. Other than that, there just weren’t a lot of bright spots. That said, rested versions of Matt Guerrier and Luis Ayala really looked good. Ayala, I thought, really looked good. He was throwing hard, and the ball was moving like crazy, so that was encouraging. Now the team gets another day off before starting a three game series in Cleveland against the only team with a worse record in the AL Central.

So, a question for you… 16 games into the season, the team is 7-9, and they have been incredibly up and down, each facet of the team has been inconsistent. I want to believe that if and when it all comes together, that this team is still the best in the AL Central, but at what point do we start to wonder? How worried are you about the bullpen struggles? More or less worried than about the starting staff (minus Perkins, of course). What about the offense?

Until then, here are a few minor league notes:

·      Rochester 7, Pawtucket 8 (11 Innings)Kevin Mulvey gave up two runs on four hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out five. Bobby Keppel went two scoreless innings, and Sean Henn struck out two in his shutout inning. But Ben Julianel came in and gave up a hit and two walks and all three scored. He got just two outs. Armando Gabino came in and gave up the inherited runs, plus three of his own over the next 1.2 innings. Mike Gosling came in and walked one batter before getting a bases loaded strikeout, but then a second walk ended the game in the 11th. Jason Pridie went 2-4 with two walks. Luke Hughes was 2-4. Trevor Plouffe hit a big three run homer. Matt Macri hit his first homer.

·      New Britain 6, Portland 4Matt Moses… could he be turning a corner? The Twins top pick from 2003 is hitting over .300 so far this season, and in this game he went 2-4 with his second homer and three RBI. Brian Dinkelman went 2-3 with a walk and his second double. Whit Robbins went 2-3 with a walk. Rene Tosoni hit his second home run of the season. Jay Rainville picked up the Win. He gave up three runs on six hits and a walk in five innings. Zach Ward got one out before allowing a run on a hit and a walk. Jose Lugo got an out. Then Rob Delaney got five outs, two on strikeouts. Anthony Slama picked up the save with 1.2 scoreless innings, including three strikeouts. By the way, Erik Lis recorded his first double of the year!

·      Ft. Myers 6, Palm Beach 1David Bromberg threw an excellent game for the win. He went six innings and gave up just one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out three. Spencer Steedley worked two scoreless innings. Henry Arias pitched a scoreless ninth. Deibinson Romero led the offense, going 2-3 with his sixth double.

·      Beloit 2, Quad Cities 4 – The Snappers managed just five hits in this game. Adan Severino went 1-3 with a walk and his third double. Eli Tintor was 1-3 with a walk. Dan Osterbrock fell to 0-2 in this one. He gave up four runs on ten hits and a walk. He struck out five in his six innings. Newly promoted Bruce Pugh struck out four in his two scoreless innings. Matt Williams, who inexplicably was demoted to the Snappers, pitched a scoreless inning.

·      Just to cover those Snappers roster changes – Reliever Danny Hernandez was released. He was very good until the shoulder surgery and Tommy John surgery and just hasn’t been the same since. James Beresford, a middle infielder, is now on the Disabled List. Matt Williams came down from Ft. Myers, while Bruce Pugh came up from Extended Spring Training.

·      At the Twins BaseballDigest.com page, you will want to check out Morning Doinks each and every morning, including Thursday morning’s version from Josh Johnson.

·      You will definitely want to read an incredible article by Parker Hageman that puts Tony Oliva’s Rookie of the Year season into context.

·      LaVelle E. Neal posted some Minor League notes on his blog. Be sure to check out the comments as I made a few points in there.

·      There is a diary on Shooter Hunt over at John Sickels Minor League Ball that you should just peruse.

·      The Twins Geek is the Man! Not only was he on WCCO last night with Dark Star, but he also will be hosting tonight’s edition of the MNGameNight.com podcast. I have the night off, but I’m certain John will put together a great show!

Finally, I wanted to share with you an e-mail I got from a reader that I thought was worth posting and welcoming your comments on. Be sure to add any feedback you would like to:

Seth –

I wanted to send a quick note on Deolis Guerra.  It bothers me when people complain that he is in High A ball for a third year.  The response I always gave is that he was rushed into St Lucie by the Mets and he is still pretty young.  But I never really realized how young he really is.  I’ve attached an Excel spreadsheet listing all the pitchers (SP and RP) for the four minor league that are playing right now, plus the pitchers that are listed on milb.com as playing at Elizabethton and the GCL Twins (which I assume are from last season).  This gives me a total of 76 pitchers in the Twins system (77 including Guerra himself) and these are the conclusions.

·         There are only six pitchers out of 76 that are younger than Guerra (all pitched in the GCL last year)

·         Guerra is younger than all the guys who pitched in Elizabethton last  year

·         Guerra is younger than all the pitchers on the Beloit roster as of today

·         Guerra is younger than all the pitchers on the Fort Myers roster as of today by a minimum of 481 days (Tyler Robertson)

·         Guerra is 1,279 days (3.5 years) younger than Jay Rainville, the youngest pitcher at New Britain, his next stop

I’m not even sure what I am trying to prove here, but I think its too soon to give up on him because he is not in AA right now.

Dick

I don’t disagree at all, but at the same time, I do believe this is an important year in that it would be nice to see progress in his second year with the organization. We were told that the Twins really tweaked his mechanics and over time, it would really pay off. Hopefully we see some of that because at some point “young for level of competition” just isn’t enough.

But for now, that’s all I’ve got. Be sure to check out the rest of the Twins blogs, and as always, if you have any comments, leave them here.

I’m Back, Kind Of

22 Apr

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

It took about 24 hours, but I do now have a functional computer. I won’t get into all of its issues. I just know that it is nice to have back.

The Twins and Red Sox were supposed to play on Tuesday night, but the weather dictated that it just wasn’t going to happen. So on Wednesday, the team’s will play a split double header, with the first game starting at 11:35 central time and the second game at 6:30 central time.

·         David Dorsey of the Ft. Myers News Press wrote a nice article on the comeback of Joe Mauer. The article has some terrific quotes from Mauer and also goes beyond the baseball field. There are also some great comments from his current Extended Spring Training coach, and his brother, Jake Mauer.

·         I heard that former Twins prospect Danny Santiesteban, who was released earlier this month, signed with the Newark Bears in the independent Atlantic League. I’m not certain if he will pitch or play the outfield. I also heard, but have not been able to verify, that Lew Ford will be playing in the same league. Ford had signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies in March.

·         There was a lot of talk in the blogosphere about Jesse Crain being put on the Disabled List with arm problems.

o   The Twins Geek thinks maybe the team has been too cautious with its starters while not being as concerned with the bullpen.

o   Aaron Gleeman asked if the Crain injury was yet another sign of bullpen misuse during the Gardenhire regime, a pattern of events over the last eight seasons.

o   Over the Baggy says there is plenty of room to go around but wonders about some of those free agent relievers the Twins could have considered.

·         On Friday, the Twins designated Philip Humber for assignment so that they could sign reliever Juan Morillo, a move I very strongly endorse (for what that is worth). On Tuesday, it was announced that no team claimed Humber, so the Twins were able to send him down to AAA Rochester where he will take the roster spot of the called-up Jose Mijares. I think this is good news for the Twins. Now, from all I’ve seen, there is little to believe that Humber will ever be a solid major league pitcher, certainly not a difference maker. But that Rochester team needs another starter, and Humber can do that. And there really aren’t any starters in New Britain that appear ready for AAA.

·         On Tuesday night, it was not just the Twins that were postponed due to weather. The Rochester Red Wings and New Britain Rockcats also had their games postponed by rain.

·         Ft. Myers had a big night though. They beat Palm Beach 16-6. Estarlin de Los Santos went 3-5 with a triple. Ben Revere went 2-4 with two walks and his fifth stolen base. He is now hitting .333. Chris Parmelee returned to the lineup and went 2-4 with a walk and his third home run. Rene Leveret went 2-4 with a walk and his third double. Steve Singleton went 2-6. Danny Berg went 1-2 with three walks. Deolis Guerra improved to 2-0 with seven solid innings. He gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Santos Arias gave up three runs (2 earned) on three hits and a walk in the 8th inning. Kyle Waldrop through a perfect ninth.

·         Beloit lost to Quad Cities 15-2 last night. One positive is that Angel Morales went 2-4 with a triple to raise his season average to .129. He also stole a base. Nate Hanson went 2-4 with a double. The saga of Shooter Hunt continued. He went just 2.2 innings and gave up seven runs (5 earned) on three hits. He walked six and hit a batter. Danny Rondon then came in and gave up six runs (4 earned) on six hits and two walks. Michael Allen threw a perfect inning before Dan Berlind gave up two unearned runs in his inning. Joe Testa struck out three in his inning. Of course, he also walked three and gave up two runs on a hit. Steve Blevins then pitched a scoreless inning.

·         Finally, if you didn’t check out my WordPress site (talkintwinsbb.wordpress.com) yesterday, I did post a quick update there as well.

Hopefully I am now back on track and can post better. And as always, if you have any comments, leave them here.
