I just heard that Carlos Gutierrez and Alex Burnett have been promoted from Ft. Myers to New Britain. Gutierrez has had a couple of rougher outings of late, but still is one of the better pitching prospects in the organization. Burnett has been a starter throughout his career, but this year is working out of the bullpen. He will likely replace Rob Delaney who was promoted to Rochester yesterday. It will be interesting to see whose spot in New Britain’s starting rotation Gutierrez takes.
Let the promotion season begin!!

Seth, with the draft coming up, how would you rank the Twins by position throughout the system? Which ones are they the strongest in? Which are they the thinnest in?
I’m loving this move. I wonder if Burnett will be placed in the New Britain bullpen or will get another shot at the rotation. He doesn’t light up the radar gun, but he’s had success as a starter and I’d love to see him get another go at it. Also, Carlos Gutierrez’s ground ball-fly out ratio is ridiculous. As long as he has a good defense behind him, he should be fine at each level.
Great dig, Seth!
I keep Burnett in the bullpen. Plenty of starters out there.
Guiterrez can replace either Rainville or Mullins. Remember, the plan was to put Mullins full time in the bullpen last year, which got short-circuited when the injury bug hit in NB…
I’m sure it’s not a factor in his promotion, but Gutierrez has an artificially low ERA thanks to 12 of the 20 runs he’s allowed being ‘unearned.’ His control has been pretty bad, not necessarily surprising for an extreme sinkerballer. Low strikeout rate is a bit worrisome but hopefully the Twins can progress his secondary pitches.
Great move… Remember that in LEN3′s blog yesterday I indicated that there are no LH relievers in Rochester now and Santos will likely go to the pen, allowing a NB pitcher to come up to start for Rochester. This looks like it is happening. Also Hendrickson is pretty much a gonner
I was disappointed in Gutierrez’s last couple starts. In his last start, he gave up 7 hits in 5 innings, but it’s worth noting that he still had a 12:1 GB/FB ratio that game so I’m not discouraged at all. Will look forward to following him in NB.
Excellent Burnett debut at AA tonight, inherited a runner, struck out both batters he faced to end the 7th inning. RockCats scored on bases loaded walk and HBP to win 2-1, despite 2 hits.
I remember some not inconsiderable wailing and gnashing of teeth when the Twins picked Gutierrez in the draft. He certainly seems to be on the fast track at this point.
