Valencia Promoted to Rochester

Danny Valencia hit .373 in May. He was hitting .343. But then he went into a Big League slump, and he was hitting just .260. In his last four games, he is 8-15 and has his batting average up to .284. On the season, he has 28 extra base hits in 218 at bats. And now that he busted out of the slump, according to a source close to the situation, he has been promoted to AAA Rochester where he should take over 3B duties on a daily basis. (Certainly there could be other promotions associated to this one, and I will update as I hear them.)

Valencia is an excellent combination of baseball player. He can hit for average. He can hit for power. He can take quality at bats. He has a strong arm and he plays excellent defense at 3B.

Last month, I ranked Valencia as my #3 Twins prospect, and said that I hope he puts himself in position to compete for the starting 3B job when the Twins open up Target Field next April. With this promotion, he is right on track! Let me know what you think.

That is great news! Have you heard anything regarding Hughes? I know he was on the DL. What do you think they do with him now?

Hughes should move to the OF. That’s where he hit his best in Winter Ball. A person who watched him in AA I know said he did not look good or comfy at any infield spot they tried.

Valencia is somewhat overrated by many Twins fans, but he will be an average 3rd baseman for a few years of his peak. Plus he’s right-handed, which is good for lineup balance. In the short term, he’ll be a downgrade on Crede, albeit one with much less injury risk.

Sweet – I was hoping for this news before I go see the Wings play the hated Iron Pigs next month. Glad to hear tht there will be a true prospect likely to play that day.

John – How is he overrated? Nobody is making him there top prospect and saying he is an all-star. Bloggers and scouts are saying he is a solid all-around 3B. So far his minor league numbers tell us he is just that. Not sure how that is being overrated and how you think that. Also, Crede has shown power and good defense in his time here but I guarantee if you brought Valencia up right now he would hit at least .250. I like Crede and he was a good addition for this year and if we could get him at a good price for next year I would think about it again to let Valencia develop but I wouldn’t call it a big downgrade.

The problem that I with Valencia is that I never hear him mentioned in baseball circles as an up & comer. Such as Baseball America, etc. I’m worried that he might be an over-rated player. He certainly is not in the all-star caliber of Crede.

how can he be an overrated player if Baseball America doesn’t rank him real high?

I’m with Andy. I think he can be that borderline All-Star type. Hit for good average, .280-.300, good power (15-20 HR), and drive in runs while playing really solid defense at 3B. he could have a couple of better years in there where he does get on an All-Star team. I don’t know. I will take a very solid player at a position for 6 years or more any time.

Is it possible that I’ve over-rated him by putting him at #3? Of course. Maybe he should be the Twins #5 or #7 prospect. I’ll take my chances. But Baseball America isn’t perfect either. He’s not ranked real highly by them because he’s not 19. That’s the big thing for them.

    Seth,

Hope your right! But, unlike the draft, once a player is in the minors for a few yeas most of those sites have a pretty good handle on what a player can do.

The guy went 3 for 5. Completely showed up Denard Span in his AAA debut. If he can rake in Rocester will he be a guy who is up in September?
