Baffling!

Wow!! This is one of the more crazy trades I have seen. The Padres traded submarining reliever Cla Merideth for 31 year old utility infielder (with 31 big league at bats) Oscar Salazar!! This is seriously becoming a little annoying. Does Merideth really have that little value? Twins need a reliever, don’t they? Twins sidewinder Pat Neshek won’t be back until next year, right? Of course, now the Orioles have three relief pitchers that the Twins should be interested in. Merideth, Danny Baez and George Sherrill. The Twins must have no interest in Merideth because they could have matched the offer with guys like Matt Macri or Alejandro Machado! They could have sent both and they could compete with Luis Rodriguez for playing time at 2B.

Any thoughts?

Yeah… that was a very bluffing trade. Unless there is something wrong with Meredith, I’m sure that the Twins could have topped that. DePodesta has nothing on his blog about this yet, but it would be interesting to hear an explanation…

Actually I have “Inside Sources” with the Twins and when they discussed Cla Meredith with the Padres they were asking for one of our young starters (Blackburn, Slowey, or Liriano). It must be so frustrating for the Twins that all these teams in the majors are conspiring against them and offering reasonable trades to each other but unreasonable demands to the Twins.

So we are supposed to believe they want Blackburn or Slowey from us and actually end up settling on a career minor leaguer who is 31 and will probably be just a backup.

I’m not saying that you are 100% wrong but if that was the case then Bill Smith needs to work harder. It sounds like he made one phone call and then gave up. That’s not the way it works and the Padres obviously would have lowered demands. This is a very frustrating trade for Twins fans. Meredith is a MUCH MUCH MUCH better option then Mulvey.

His ERA likely would have went down considerably coming here simply because of the novelty of his motion. Then deal him in the offseason. When I saw this I knew the Twins weren’t doing a damn thing.

If true, yet another example of dishonesty from the front office regarding trade talks. Everyone asks for one of their “young starters” and then takes garbage from another team…

I am amazed how many Twins fans eat that crap up. Pure stupidity…

    There are two problems here:

    1) Cla Meredith is no better than the other middle relievers the Twins already have and that is being generous. He certainly is not a 8th inning guy for the Twins.

    2) I doubt the Padres consider Macri or Machado the equivalent of Salazar who apparently is a DH/corner infielder with some power.

Meredith hasn’t pitched well for three years.

No wonder the Twins passed on him.
