A Look Back: 2009

31 Dec

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

If you’re one of the handful of people working today in the office (or if you’re just sitting at home, relaxing on a day off), you’ll want to check out a couple of podcasts from last night. First, I was on the Travis Talks Minnesota Sports podcast, talking Twins, Vikings, Gophers and more. But after that show, I listened to Fanatic Jack’s Twins Talk podcast and it was a great Year in Review, so I definitely recommend listening to it as well.

As we sit here on New Years Eve, we really have two things to do. First, it is important to look back at the year 2009. Second, you have to look forward to 2010. So, my first blog of the day will be a look back at the past 365 days. Later in the day, I will post something looking forward to 2010, so be sure to check back.

Looking back one year, the Twins were coming off of a tough 1-0 loss in Game 163 against the Twins, but the offseason was a pretty quiet one. For the first time in quite some time, the Twins did not go out and sign a veteran starter. Instead, we were all excited about the starting five of Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, Kevin Slowey, Francisco Liriano and Glen Perkins all performed well enough in 2008 for the team to feel confident going into 2009 with the five youngsters. The bullpen had its struggles in 2008, and the Twins countered by signing Luis Ayala. They also offered arbitration to Matt Guerrier despite his rough final two months in 2008. Names like Eric Gagne, Joe Nelson, Russ Springer and Juan Cruz were discussed ad nauseum. The lineup was pretty solid. The team resigned Nick Punto to a two year, $8.5 million contract following a solid 2008 season. That created plenty of discussion, but I was of the opinion that it was a fair-market signing. There was a lot of discussion about Joe Crede. His agent, Scott Boras, wanted to get his agent $7 million base salary plus incentives. Well, Bill Smith wisely did not give in, and in the end, he beat Scott Boras. Crede signed late for a $2.5 million base with incentives.

In early April, the Twins opened their season without Joe Mauer. He had an injury that was mis-diagnosed, so he missed all of spring training and all of April. When he came back on May 1st, he homered on his first swing and then doubles on his second swing. He just continued to hit the entire season. As you all know, he led the league in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. He won his third batting title, his third silver slugger, his second gold glove and his very first American League MVP. As much adoration and adulation as Mauer deserves, he was not the only story for the Twins in 2009.

Justin Morneau was a legitimate MVP candidate through the first half of the season. Power, batting average, driving runs in. In reality, he was just being Justin Morneau. But he struggled the last six weeks of the season, and in mid-September he was shut down when it was determined that he had a stress fracture in his back. On that day, Michael Cuddyer moved in to first base, and he dominated over the season’s final three weeks. He provided power, clutch hits and solid defense and really catapulted the Twins into the playoffs. He hit 32 homers and came up just shy of 100 RBI. Jason Kubel hit two three run home runs in Game 162 for the Twins and ended the season by hitting .300 with 102 RBI and finally showed all of his potential. Denard Span proved that 2009 was not a fluke at all. He hit .315 and got on base nearly 39% of the time.

Scott Baker missed his first start of the season and really struggled at the start of the season. Some were worried that he let his big contract affect is play. But he came on great after the first six weeks and won 15 games. Nick Blackburn was an All-Star candidate and the team’s top pitcher the first half of the season. After a bad start to the second half, he came on again in September with big start after big start. Kevin Slowey was the first pitcher in the Major Leagues to ten wins before bone chips in his wrist had to be surgically removed. Francisco Liriano and Glen Perkins had their struggles, but the Twins were able to replace that over time. Joe Nathan had another amazing season and set the Twins record for Saves in a season. Matt Guerrier was as good as any set up man in baseball. But the bullpen really struggled in the middle of the season.

But the Twins front office came through with some very good deals. Of course, there was also the failed signing of Mark Grudzielanek, but that was just a minor league deal, so no big loss. At the July 31st deadline, the team acquired SS Orlando Cabrera in exchange for minor league SS Tyler Ladendorf. Cabrera got off to a good start with the Twins, then was horrible offensively and defensively, but he came up big down the stretch. A few days later, the team acquired RHP Carl Pavano for a Player to be Named Later. The player ended up being Yohan Pino. Pavano was big in all but two or three of his starts with the Twins and pitched great in the Game 3 loss to the Yankees. Late in August, Bill Smith bolstered the bullpen by adding Jon Rauch for a PTBNL that turned out to be Kevin Mulvey, who the Diamondbacks claimed from the Twins who knew that Arizona was the first team able to claim him. They also added lefty Ron Mahay who had been released by the Royals a couple of weeks earlier.

When Justin Morneau went down in mid-September, the Twins were down a bunch, and Twins fans were ready to throw in the towel. There were several more times that Twins fans threw in the towel. And yet somehow, some way, the Twins found a way to tie the Tigers after 161 games. Both teams won on the final Sunday to end their regular regular seasons tied. The Twins celebrated their final game in the Metrodome with an incredible program, introducing the current Twins roster and many former players including players from the 1987 and 1991 World Series teams.  Of course, it wasn’t the final game after all. The Twins won the season series against the Tigers which gave them the home field advantage in Game 163 (after MLB learned the previous year that a coin flip is not the best, most fair home field determinant).  Game 163 had enough ups and downs and one of the great games. The Twins would lose to the eventual World Series champion New York Yankees in three games, but it was really another terrific season for the Twins.

There were plenty of other stories from the 2009 year for the Twins that are worth mentioning.

Kyle Gibson fell to the Twins with the 22nd overall pick because of concerns about his forearm. Negotiations went right up until the 11 ½ hour. But the two sides agreed to a $1.85 million signing bonus. That was way over MLB’s slot recommendation. The team’s first four picks were college pitchers, something the Twins have had success drafting this decade. They then selected Gophers 2B Derek McCallum in the 4th round. The next two picks were college catchers. The Twins have had terrific success drafting high school bats and college arms in the last dozen years.

Bill Smith also told TwinsCentric that the organization has been working for the last decade on developing their international scouting department. 2009 was a huge year for the Twins in that market. In July, they signed “the best prospect ever to come out of Europe,” Max Kepler to a $775,000 signing bonus. Kepler is very raw, but has a ton of tools. Jorge Polanco has a very good glove at shortstop. He was ranked by Baseball America as the #23 player from Latin America. And of course, the big news was the late September signing of Dominican shortstop Miguel Angel Sano to a $3.15 million signing bonus. The 6-foot-3, 190 pound shortstop is compared physically to Hanley Ramirez, with quick hands and a bat like Albert Pujols. Of course, he is 16-years-old with a long way to go, but the bigger story here is that the Twins now have a strong presence in the Dominican Republic. They have gained strong credibility. They have created in-roads around the globe, in Europe, in Australia, in the Far East and everywhere in between. This bodes well for the future.

The Twins had a strong presence in both the World Baseball Classic and the World Cup following the season. In the WBC, Tom Stuifbergen became a big name when he threw four shutout innings for The Netherlands in the elimination game against the Dominican Republic. Justin Morneau and Jesse Crain played for Canada. Nick Punto played for Italy. James Beresford and Luke Hughes were key contributors for Australia. Trevor Plouffe was the starting shortstop and second hitter for Team USA in the World Cup tournament in Europe after the season. Plouffe was a key contributor in the USA’s gold medal performance. Stuifbergen was one of the best pitchers in the tournament. Luke Hughes and Canada’s Rene Tosoni were two of the top hitters. Speaking of Tosoni, he also represented the Twins and Canada on the World Team of the Futures Game. Tosoni was named the game’s MVP.

Following the World Series, the Twins traded their fourth outfielder, Carlos Gomez, to the Milwaukee Brewers for JJ Hardy, who will hopefully be their shortstop for the next couple of years.

2009 was a very interesting and exciting year for the Minnesota Twins and their fans. Another very good baseball season, and signs that the Twins may be willing to spend more as they enter their new ballpark in 2010. As a fan, that’s really all you can ask for when you aren’t the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets or Angels!

Thank you very much to everyone for making SethSpeaks.net one of your daily (or weekly) stops. As I’ve mentioned before, it is the reader comments and interaction that make it all worthwhile.  Hopefully on at least a few of those days it was worth your time to stop here!

I want to also thank all of the other Twins bloggers. I need to thank the TwinsCentric crew (John Bonnes, Nick Nelson, Parker Hageman) for all the work and fun that it has been to put those books together and the projects that we have in the works. But the Twins blogosphere is pretty special and great to be a part of. We are all very supportive of each other and that makes it a lot of fun.

I will be back either later tonight or tomorrow morning with a look ahead to 2010, so be sure to stop by if you have a minute.

I wish you all a very happy New Year. Be safe! Don’t drink and drive!

If you have any questions or comments, Please feel free to discuss here.

Good morning, everyone! Here is a good example of how exhausted I’ve been… last night, I hosted the SethSpeaks.net Live Twins Chat here, and about 90 minutes into it, I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up and answered a couple more questions before calling it a day! So I apologize for the abbreviated blog today, but here are a couple of things for you to peruse:

Alright, that is it for today. I will be back, probably, with my final posting of the 2009 year tomorrow. Unless, of course, there is any Twins news. Please feel free to discuss here.

I’m Back, Kind Of…

29 Dec

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

Good morning, Twins fans! I certainly hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday and weekend. This week, we get another short week with New Years Eve on Thursday and New Years Day on Friday. Here are some random thoughts on the Twins, Vikings and more in the form of short thoughts and some links:

First things first, there will again be no SethSpeaks.net Weekly Minnesota Twins Podcast. Instead, I will host a Live Twins Chat, so if you would like to get an e-mail reminder, participate in the chat or read the transcript later, please Click Here.

  • Alright, I don’t talk much about the Vikings on here anymore, but I also don’t miss any of the games. Sure, I flipped over to Pawn Stars on the History Channel for a few plays, but in general, I most all plays. Here are a few thoughts I have on the Purple, but certainly feel free to add yours:
  1. They brought Brett Favre in to win in the playoffs, right? We aren’t to the playoffs yet.
  2. The Vikings issues in these losses have had little to do with the quarterback. Against Arizona and Carolina, it was almost completely on the offensive line. Last night, it was on the Vikings defense.
  3. Antoine Winfield was never fast, so, where was the safety help on that final play?
  4. Yo Adrian, hold on to the ball for once?
  5. The Vikings suddenly don’t have a bye week locked up. If Philly beats the Cowboys, the Vikings will host the Cowboys the following week, a game they should win. However, when they travel to Philadelphia, they could very easily be destroyed again because the game will be played outside… and the Eagles may be the best team in the league right now.
  6. Of course, at this time a year ago, people were talking about how the Cardinals were backing into the playoffs and couldn’t compete, and well, they made it to the Super Bowl. So, again, the playoffs are a crapshoot in football, as it is in baseball, so I’m not terribly worried either way.
  7. Maybe I’m just too laid back.
  • Mark Derosa signed a two year, $12 million contract to play 3B for the San Francisco Giants. As you know, I’m not a huge fan of Mark Derosa, to be sure. This shows that the Twins clearly were not interested in him. He is a 34 year old utility player with a bit of power. My guess is that the Twins will sign a free agent 3B, but that they are waiting for the market to determine which guy they can get on a one year contract. Adrian Beltre is (wisely) out of their range, and that’s fine. But basically, the market could make Miguel Tejada or Melvin Mora available on one year deals. Or, worst case, they could go back to Joe Crede. But guys like Tejada and Mora at least have more potential than Crede, so getting them for one year allows a higher caliber of player without lessening the commitment to Danny Valencia over the long haul.
  • Of course, we all assume that Nick Punto will start somewhere, but I’m still holding out hope for Felope Lopez.
  • Here are Travis’s choices for Twins prospects 16-20, and here are 11-15, and then check out his choices for Twins prospects 6-10.
  • Twinkie Town is voting on the Twins #24 Prospect now.
  • Expect to hear much more about the Twins Winter Caravan in the next week or two. I have heard (But have not been able to verify online anywhere) that Nick Blackburn and Matt Guerrier will be going to Fargo as part of the northwest tour. I understand that Denard Span and Jeff Manship will be teaming on another route. Obviously 2-3 players get teamed with one media member and sometimes a Twins historical player and travel around the Upper Midwest the weeks before Twins Fest which is the final weekend in January.

Is there anything else going on with the Twins? That’s all I’ve got for now. Please feel free to discuss here.

As I mentioned yesterday, the weather terrorists beat me, that’s for sure. Fearing the 12 to 20 inches of snow that will be hitting central Minnesota later this afternoon, I left the Twin Cities Tuesday night. And now, we just wait. Should be fun! Anyway, still busy on several fronts, so again today, here are just a bunch of links for you to read. Hopefully you enjoy them:

No Podcast Tonight

The weather terrorists won. If there is really going to  be like 15 feet of snow coming to central Minnesota between Tuesday night and Friday night, I am going to head out of town and enjoy my Christmas holiday a little early. Therefore, no new podcast tonight. The podcast will start up again next Tuesday night, December 29th, at 9:00 p.m. Until then, here are a few links for you to peruse:

Monday Monday

21 Dec

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

Good morning everyone. This will just be a real quick update. I am spending the day writing about baseball. I’m so far behind on several of my projects, but I again wanted to give a quick update on the projects that I am working on.

  • SethSpeaks Minnesota Twins Prospect Handbook 2010 – If you want the 2009 Prospect Handbook, it is priced way down, so get your copy now! As I mentioned earlier, last year the handbook was out by Thanksgiving. This year, my hope is to have it available by around January 18th. I think this is a good thing in that, the Rule 5 draft is past us, hopefully we will soon hear about minor league signings, and it will be more timely. I also hope that you will think that the quality of the book is much higher. There will be more stats, but don’t think it is a statistical book. It’s not the key part. The key is that I have been able to get a lot of scouting information from various sources on most of the players. I think that the prospect profiles will be much improved. I will also be writing a few additional articles/stories. It will again include some prospect rankings. I’m working on finding a few Foreword writers. But it is getting closer, and I really hope that you will want to purchase and use as a reference throughout 2010.
  • The TwinsCentric crew is working on a joint venture project that will be complete by the end of January.
  • I am also writing some Twins content for Fox Sports that will appear in a magazine as well.
  • Please note that if I suddenly don’t write much of anything for a couple of weeks, it is because my fingers, hands and wrists no longer work, or carpal tunnel surgery has been necessary.

Here are some quick links for you to read today:

  • Even with the holiday, it will be a busy week for Twins podcasts:
  1. Tonight at 5:00 central time, Travis from Travis Twins Talk will be hosting his very own podcast. Be sure to check out his inaugural show. It will be a little different in that he will talk about all Minnesota sports, the Twins, the Vikings, the Wolves, the Gophers and more. So, do me a favor and be sure to check it out here!
  2. The SethSpeaks.net Weekly Minnesota Twins podcast will be on Tuesday night at 9:00. Guests are currently being recruited!\
  3. And on Wednesday at 9:00, Jack Steal from Fanatic Jack Talks Twins will be hosting his weekly Twins podcast, so you will certainly want to listen to that and call in.

Alright, that’s it for now… I’ve got a ton of writing to do. I hope you understand. If there are Twins topics that come up, I’ll try to write, otherwise, please feel free to discuss below.

R.I.P. Brittany Murphy

20 Dec

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

TMZ is reporting the actress Brittany Murphy died this morning at the age of 32 of a full cardiac arrest. I’m sure there will be many reports coming out over time. I always thought that she was a really good actress.

Here is a list of her movies that I personally watched, and in most cases enjoyed:

  • Clueless
  • Drop Dead Gorgeous
  • Girl, Interrupted
  • Summer Catch
  • Don’t Say a Word
  • Riding in Cars with Boys
  • 8 Mile
  • Just Married
  • Uptown Girls
  • Little Black Book
  • Happy Feet (voice of Gloria)
  • King of the Hill (voice of Luann since 1997)

That is a lot of quality for someone just 32 years old. My personal Top 5 would be; 1.) 8 Mile, 2.) Little Black Book, 3.) Just Married, 4.) Girl Interrupted, 5.) Summer Catch. Please feel free to discuss here.

Weekend Links

20 Dec

also available at www.SethSpeaks.net -

I haven’t been real great at linking to other Twins sites and such, so I thought a quick Weekend Links posting would be good. Enjoy!

  • First of all, don’t mess with the Twins! If you’re a blogger, be very careful of what you show on your site, specifically if you are hoping to make any money off of it. Check out this story about Ballpark Magic!
  • The Twinkie Towns Top 50 Twins Prospect voting is now attempting to select the team’s #17 prospect. Check it out to see who the top 16 are.
  • Also, Roger posted his Weekly Twins Minor League Report.
  • After spending the last few months doing silly things like studying, Travis is back and he is starting to display his Year End Top 50 Prospects. Here are his choices for 46-50.
  • Turning the Tables (by Nick Nelson) sure received a lot of attention. Nick talks about how the Twins could become the big spenders in the AL Central.
  • Parker from Over the Baggy asks “Could the Twins  Actually be Serious about Aroldis Chapman?” In my opinion, they should be involved, but I also think giving too much money to any pitcher (as I believe there is an inherent risk with any pitcher. Really, how many pitchers have had no arm problems?). I do think that the Twins should seriously consider Chapman, but their way to convince him to pick the Twins can’t be money. The Twins should try to convince him that he will make his money down the road, but it is more important to his career and to the Twins that they not rush him. Consider this, he is 21 years old, left-handed and has been clocked at 102 mph. But does anyone believe that he is more polished that Kyle Gibson, or even someone like David Price. Chapman should sign and go to the Florida State League for a half season in 2010. He should end the year at AA. He should not make his big league debut until he is ready. The Twins would have the patience for that, would Chapman and his representatives?
  • Have I mentioned lately that Josh Taylor is back… and that’s a good thing!
  • The Twins Geek asks “What is Kenny Williams up to?” I do think that the White Sox are the Twins primary competition in the AL Central in 2010. The moves they made in 2009 convince me of that. Jake Peavy will help tremendously and give them four solid starters. Alex Rios will figure things out and be very good. Their offseason moves don’t have me scared at all. Juan Pierre is not intimidating at all. Mark Teahen is a nice player, but not scary. Andruw Jones is done, and he doesn’t care. They let go of Jermaine Dye and Scott Podsednik. Not huge losses, but I’m not certain that the offseason additions make up for their losses.
  • Granny Baseball predicts the 2010 Rochester Red Wings roster.
  • Twinkie Baseball takes a look at some of the Twins Dominican Summer League Prospects. Here are his thoughts on Pedro Guerra. His thoughts on Wander Guillen.

There you go. A little bit of Twins talk for you on a Sunday morning. Please feel free to discuss here.

SethSpeaks Live Twins Chat

18 Dec

As Christmas approaches, little appears to be going on with the Twins. Well, I guess their offices are moving from the Metrodome to Target Field over the next week, but there are not any real Twins rumors. But we’re fans, we can make up our own rumors and plans and such. I mean, take a listen to Fanatic Jack’s Twins Podcast from Wednesday night. He’s got all kinds of ideas for Bill Smith. So, there is plenty to discuss, and I will happily take your questions for an hour on Friday, starting at noon central time.

To set a reminder, to participate in the chat, or to read the transcript later, Click Here.

I will open up the chat room a little early, so get your questions in. If there is any Twins news to report, I’ll be sure to do that too.

NFL “Expert” Picks – Week 15

17 Dec

Here are the Week 15 picks from our Expert Panel! It had been awhile, but I am happy to say that the updated standings for this league can now be found here. I has been about three weeks behind, so big hat-tip to Melissa Lien for helping it get caught up! In Week 14, Dan Slowey and Mike McCardell led the way by going 14-2. Slowey (Dan variety) grabbed the lead in this competition early and has somehow managed to maintain it throughout. In fact, his lead is now three games over Dan Osterbrock and Steve Blevins. McCardell and TwinsCentric’s own Nick Nelson are both four games back of the lead. But now there are just three more weeks to go.  If you have any thoughts, leave Comments here. If not, Click here for our picks for the 15th week of the season.
