Just Say No! Pudge Edition

Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting that the Twins are showing some interest in Ivan Rodriguez. Rodriguez is currently in Miami playing with the Puerto Rico team in the WBC and trying to make a big league team interested in him. First, I should point out that as much as I’m not a Heyman fan, he has proven to be correct in many cases this offseason. Clearly he does have some very good sources. The source with this information is a “source with a National League team in the bidding.”

For a week, people have been asking me for my thoughts on the Twins and Ivan Rodriguez. I see absolutely no reason for the Twins to even be in discussions with the 14 time All-Star and future first-ballot Hall of Famer UNLESS there is legitimate concern that Joe Mauer will be out for more than half of the 2009 season. To this point, I am still of the belief that he will be back and playing within a couple of weeks after Opening Day. If that’s the case, why would the Twins want Rodriguez? He is going to want to start, and well, Mauer is pretty good! Mike Redmond is a very capable backup, a role he is perfect for. In reality, is the 38 year old Rodriguez a significant improvement over Redmond, or even Jose Morales?

Rodriguez is a solid catcher with a very strong arm still. However, he is not known as a great game caller, and when there are runners on base, he calls for a lot of fastballs. In reality, the improved defense you would get with Rodriguez could be nullified by the fact that Redmond and Morales have worked a lot with the Twins pitchers.

Rodriguez supposedly could play some 1B or 3B, but the Twins really don’t have a need at those positions. He would be a horrible 2B on the turf. He’s not exactly a great team player. Remember, he is one credited with the firing of Alan Trammell in Detroit.

Again, unless there is reason to believe that Joe Mauer will be out the entire season, there is really zero reason for the Twins to even explore the possibility of bring in Ivan Rodriguez. In my opinion, even if you believe that Mauer will miss the whole year, I would rather go with Jose Morales as the regular catcher with Mike Redmond playing about half of the time.

But maybe I’m in the minority. Certainly Ivan Rodriguez is a big name, if that’s what you want on this team! I just think it screams of Livan Hernandez, Ramon Ortiz, Tony Batista and Bret Boone. I’d just say No, Thank you!

A couple other quick notes:

·         Over at Baseball Digest, Josh Johnson wrote a nice article called Remembering a Hero. Saturday would be Kirby Puckett’s birthday, and I am sure we all have a lot of great memories of the greatest Twins player!

·         Also at BaseballDigest.com, Parker has been posting Twins Morning Doinks. I enjoy it because it is a quick posting discussing several Twins topics of the day. As he says, it’s just something that you can read while you’re enjoying your morning cup of coffee.

·         Phil Mackey looked deeper at his Hitter Projections and listed the 15 Worst Hitters in 2009 according to them… is it alarming that three Twins players are on that list?

·         Pat Neshek informs us that he will be throwing a baseball on Wednesday for the first time since last November.\

·         I should post this daily, but Stick & Ball Guy continues to do his Six Word Player Evaluations, including this one on Delmon Young.

·         Nick Nelson looks at the Twins 3B Situation.

Have a great weekend!

I am not sure that Pudge can make positive contributions at this point. Just his presence in that clubhouse will be a negative thing. Morales would probably be as good if no better than Pudge. If they need a catcher, I’d bet that your buddy might be made available by the Philies and worse comes to worse, when Mauer returns, they cut Redmond and Coste resumes the backup role.

Pudge is one of those guys who I wouldn’t want on my favorite team even if he’d contribute. I just don’t like him. I know it’s irrational, but I just want him to be on a team I hate. Detroit and NY were good homes for him last year.

Yuck. A big name with not much remaining talent. He would NOT be the difference between a Mauer-less Twins team making the playoffs or not. Yuck.

[…] this claim writes Star Tribune columnist Patrick Ruesse.  Baseball Digest’s Twins editor, Seth Stohs, adequately addresses that issue as well, stating the Twins have more than enough capable backstops […]
