Father’s Day Notebook

21 Jun

At www.SethSpeaks.net, I will be updating throughout the day on several notes and rumblings and updates and such, so please check that site throughout the day and frequently comment here.

I will be posting game thoughts from Saturday and Sunday. I have heard another promotion. I have the current Elizabethton Twins and GCL Twins rosters, which of course can and will need to be updated as more draftees continue to sign. So, be sure to check back and comment!

Happy Father’s Day to all of the Fathers out there, especially mine!

Seth, looks like ETon is going to have a real Latin feel, expecially on the mound. Questions: 1) Any idea who Brian Bistagne is? Also, any word on where Jarrad Eacott and Daniel Ortiz will be assigned? Are they injured?

  2. ricky June 21, 2009 at 11:48 am #

Angel Morales didn’t play at all in yesterday’s double-header. Must be nicked up or something.

Daniel Ortiz has a torn meniscus.

    roger –

Here is the link I posted on the Strib game blog yesterday. He went undrafted so . . . The thing I liked in the article was the Twins told him he needed to learn to play “Small Ball”. They must have been playing Earl Weaver Ball at Lee University.

ricky, Morales last game was on the 17th. Haven’t seen anything about his being injured or going on the DL, however, he hadn’t been playing every day every day before that so probably is nicked up.

Ortiz is hurt. LaVelle posted that a month or so ago. I talked with Eaccot the other day. He was at LAX and I wondered why, and he said he had been released, that his arm just never came back after surgery. I think I posted that a few days ago.

Morales is hurt…. at least that’s what his facebook page said.

How good do you think Miguel Angel Sano is, and also do you think the Twins are really one of the top contenders to sign him despite the very high signing bonus he will in all likelihood receive? In your opinion, is he worth all the hype?

by the way your evaluation and reporting of minor league talent is extremely well done, and your blog and gleemans blog not only blow other blogs away, but are often much more informative than that of the strib or the press.

Thanks, that’s really really good stuff. And happy father’s day to you 🙂

Comparing last year’s rosters with this year’s, it seems that the following are unassigned:

    Omar Alcala
    Tim Atherton
    Elliot Biddle
    Javier Brown
    David Coulon
    Aaron Craig
Alex Curry – went back to college
    Deivi Germosen
    Xavier Gonzalez
    Wilmer Guanchez
    Jakub Hajtmar
    Jae-Hyung Jang
    Jean Carlos Mercedes
    Michael Mopas
    Khol Nanney
    Ben Petsch
    Dominique Rodgers
    Rafael Sanchez
    Eric Santiago
    Mauro Schiavoni
    Eliel Sierra
    Manuel Soliman
    Lesmir Vargas
    Carlos Vasquez

Do you have any information about any of them not being released?

    Re: Sano

This is a very informative article (with a video) on Sano. It is actually part 2 of a 3 series articles each with a video, which are excellent in describing what happens with and to prospects in the Dominican. It takes about 15 minutes to go through the 3 articles and videos and are highly recommended for anyone who cares about the subject of Baseball in the Dominican

The Twins had a south african player in the WBC named Robb Hein.. any word on him?

  11. Seth June 21, 2009 at 9:13 pm #

    Omar Alcala – released
Tim Atherton – sent back to Australia last July
Elliot Biddle – sent back to Australia last July
Javier Brown – released in spring
David Coulon – released awhile ago.
Aaron Craig – released middle of last season
Wilmer Guanchez – released after last season
Jakub Hajtmar – released after last season
Michael Mopas – released after last season
Khol Nanney – released after last season
Ben Petsch – released early in 2008
Dominique Rodgers – released last season
Eric Santiago – Released during the winter
Mauro Schiavoni – Released in March

“The Twins had a south african player in the WBC named Robb Hein.. any word on him?”

He was going to be sent to play in the Australian Summer League. Still under Twins control.

    Thanks, Seth.

Are that ones in Australia (Atherton, Biddle) still under Twins’ control?

  13. toby June 21, 2009 at 11:14 pm #

totally unrelated to the rookie league rosters, but: does Michael Tarsi like to start or what? His luck-independent statistics have actually been totally dominant all 3 years running: last year he just had an insanely high .380 BABIP. Stupid high GB rates, good to great K rates, better than average control. Huh.

I know you like to keep it positive, Seth, but Prof. Gardenhire’s bullpen management Saturday and Sunday would have any manager on the coasts in deep doodoo with the local media. Totally unacceptable.

Neither of them show up in the Twins Record and Information book, so I’m assuming they don’t.

Here are the names that I’m still searcing for:

    C Diaz, Julio
    P Fernandez, Alexis
    P Germosen, Deybi
    C Hendricks, Joshua
    C Martinez, Felix
    INF Melo, Franklin
    OF Mercedes, Juan Carlos
    SS Morla, Ismael
    C Sanchez, Rafael
    P Tovar, Argenis
    2B Vasquez, Carlos
    P Vizamora, Hector

Oh, and if Curry did go back to school, his rights still belong to the Twins, correct?

Nathan did the same thing when he was drafted by the Giants, played a little bit in 95, took off 96 and came back in 97.

Tars lieks to start better than be a reliever. He has jsut been experimenting with some new pitches and things and is becoming a different pitcher. His slider is developing into an out pitch and he is startign to pitch away form contact.
