Manship Promoted to Rochester

One night after Danny Valencia was promoted to AAA Rochester (where he went 3-4 with a double in his debut), another top Twins prospect was promoted to the Red Wings. On this night, starter Jeff Manship was told by his manager, Tom Nieto, that he was being promoted to AAA.

The 24 year old Manship is 6-4 with a 4.28 ERA on the season. However, in his last five starts, he has thrown 35 innings and has given up just 25 hits and seven walks. He is 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA in those games. Like Valencia, Manship was promoted to New Britain about this time one year ago. He is ready and excited for this opportunity.

Other moves are not known at this time, but I will try to find out and keep you updated. Let me know what you think.

I’m excited to see Jeff Manship here in Rochester. He’s definitely earned the move and is ready for it. I think a part of his slow start in AA can be blamed to the “Anthony Swarzak” syndrome… he was ready for a new challenge. I would guess he’ll take Bobby Keppel’s spot as a starter.

    Great news!

Good news for Manship, but I think that Fox (esp. since he is 2 years older) and DeVries had better seasons and deserved the promotion more at this point. I suspect that when (not if) Lahey goes, Fox will be up as well (with Reid Santos in the pen).

I think Matt Fox deserves it too. And I believe that it will happen. But we have to remember that it is as much about making sure the player gets what they need. Those three could all have moved up, but all three should be starting. So, which twpo of Swarzak, Mulvey, Duensing, Jones should move to the bullpen. And if you do that, who do you release from the bullpen and lose for good. And then what do you do to get Anthony Slama up to Rochester? Right now, they are all working and getting innings they need. So, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

With the Valencia talk today, it got me thinking about Joe Crede. Does anyone think that the Twins will try to sign Crede to some sort of deal after this season. His avg is a little low, and he has been banged up some, but he has provided right handed pop, and a good glove at third.
Does he deserve a 3-4 year deal if he plays the rest of the season like he has so far? I think it has to be at least considered.
If not, then do the Twins actually hand a rookie the starting job next spring? If they don’t sign Crede, and it isn’t Valenica, then who mans 3rd for opening day next year?

In all likelihood Valencia will be the third baseman in 2010. There is no way the will or should sign Crede to a long term deal. They need money to sign Mauer and some of their pitchers to extensions. Plus at the end of this season there are 9 arbitration eligible players and the end of 2010 there are 12.

What I expect the Twins will do is offer Crede arbitration. If Crede can’t find the right deal, he will accept and play another year with the Twins for $7-9mm. If he goes elsewhere, which is likely, the Twins will get a 1st round and supplemental pick.

whether a free agent is deemed a class A or B, is determined by his last 3 years of play. Based on the fact that Crede had limited play time and was unsuccessful in 2007 and 2008, I think that if he continues to swing the bat as he has, he will probably be a class B free agent (i.e. the Twins will get a supplemental pick). They might or might not offer arbitration depending on how high they think the tag might be…
