Check out the Travis Talks Minnesota Sports podcast tonight at 10:00 central time. Tonight his guest will be Chris Gates of The Daily Norseman, a Vikings blog. They’ll talk about the Vikings, and later in the show, there will be Twins, Wolves and Gophers talk too. Check it out.

Get to Know a Over the Baggy.

Scott Boras is amazing! The market for free agents that aren’t the top notch free agents has been down, and yet, Boras got a terrific contract for Adrian Beltre. The Boston Red Sox will pay him $9 million in 2010. If he proves himself healthy and very good, he can become a free agent after the season. If he has another bad year, or gets hurt again, he can pick up his $5 million player option for 2011.

With Beltre now off the market, how long before the Twins announce that they have acquired Mike Lowell and $9 million? Who would the Twins need to trade in such a deal? Or, where does Lowell end up?

Josh Johnson posted his choice for the Twins #47 Prospect. Note that he will be counting down one each day until he reaches his top prospect.

And, you can still ‘vote’ for your Hall of Famers here. Any other comments?

Does Perkins pull it off? The Red Sox haven’t acquired any of the insurance starters that everybody seems to think they would have collected yet.

Alexi Casilla, Anthony Swarzak. Getting the majority of the salary paid would be a plus. Basically a freebee if you hink Lowell is a survivor. And the TRwins only need to really rent him.

Unless the Twins would be better off trading perkins+ for Kouz and having to payout $5 mill.

With all the middle infielders the Sox have now I don’t know what they would want with Casilla. To me Kouz seems like a more expensive Valencia.

One of the original trade rumors was the Red Sox and Mets exchanging Mike Lowell and Luis Castillo. Would it be a good or bad thing if it was actually:

Twins: Mike Lowell (+9 million) AND Luis Castillo (+6 million).

    Red Sox: Glen Perkins

    Mets: Alexi Casilla

I think the down side is pretty easy to see, but it would give the Twins a more veteran presence which might make them more competitive against the AL bEAST teams. I think it would also provide known commodities at second and third base, and maybe we could grow the grass long to make up for their lack of range! It would also put Punto back into a super-sub role, where he (and Valencia) could provide protection in case any of the three new infielders are ineffective or hurt. The lineup wouldn’t look too bad:

I guess we could also resurrect the ‘League of Nations’ moniker as Lowell is from Puerto Rico and Castillo is from the Dominican Republic.

Love the potential but then I suppose Nick Punto takes over at DH for Kubel.

Veteran presence is over rated. It’s about talent.

That said, Lowell might be more talented than any other option they have right now.

Please le thte Washburn rumors be false*

I thought Lowell was done as a third baseman. Making deals for players on the downside of their career is the way bad teams get and stay bad.

lowell is hurt or he’d be a ranger. why would we want to trade for him? sign tejada, he plays all the time and could fill the #2 spot. much better fit than the oft injured lowell, if you want an injury type re-sign crede.

    fox sports:
“Mike Lowell is expected to be ready for spring training after having surgery Wednesday on a thumb injury that derailed his trade from the Boston Red Sox to the Texas Rangers.”

  9. TT January 5, 2010 at 1:04 pm #

I don’t think Lowell’s thumb is the real problem with having him play third base. He catches and throws fine, he just can’t get to a lot of balls. The fact that Fox is reporting he will be ready just means the Red Sox still hope to get some value from trading him.

I don’t see the Twins getting Lowell. I still think they will get Kouzmanoff while parting ways with Perkins and a “A” ball pitcher. Everyone keeps talking about Valencia but what has he done? He is no where near ready to play in the majors from what I saw of him last spring. Why does everyone assume he is a sure thing at 3B?

    • Kunza January 5, 2010 at 1:42 pm #

I for one am a big believer in what Valencia could give us in the lineup. After spending a week down at spring training last year and making it a point to watch Valencia take BP every day, he absolutely has the making of a big league player.

As guys like Nick Punto was fouling off batting practice pitches, Valencia was knocking them over the fence with ease. Give the kid a break!

  11. sploorp January 6, 2010 at 8:13 pm #

I can’t help but think that the Twins know something about Valencia everybody else doesn’t. Most of the 3rd basemen they have been linked to this season would require a multi-year commitment. Why would they be considering deals like that if Valencia was such a sure thing?

  12. sploorp January 6, 2010 at 8:21 pm #

Boras only got the deal he did for Beltre because two other teams were offering 3 year deals. Beltre must really feel Fenway is going to send his numbers through the roof.
