Twins Sign Ryan Doumit

I’d like to start by saying that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this signing! If you purchased a 2011-12 TwinsCentric Offseason GM Handbook, you noted that I had Doumit on my blueprint. I actually think I offered him a 2 year deal worth $7 million (you know, in my fantasy world of signing big league players to contracts). So when we saw that it was a 1 year deal for $3 million with incentives, I was really, really excited. The guy can hit. It will be interesting to see how his .800+ OPS translates to Target Field. It will be interesting to see how Gardy chooses to use him. Not a good defensive catcher, will he be the backup, or will he be an emergency catcher with a good glove backup catcher so that Doumit can DH, play some 1B and some RF.

Between Jamey Carroll and Ryan Doumit, and a few of those minor league signings announced yesterday, they might not be the huge names, but these are some really solid moves for a ball club. They address two big needs.

Now on to the pitching!!

By the way, I anticipate the Twins announcing their 40 man roster additions in the next hour or so, so be sure to check back.

Feel free to comment.

Ryan said he wasn’t going to be afraid. I’m with Seth, great pickup. But, as weak as he may be defensively, I still hope he gets more than a few games behind the plate. We need the bat.

I’m not sure how much he’ll catch. I’d be fine with him doing a little catch, some 1B, some RF, some DH… and still have a backup catcher.

I love the signing too. Don’t count out the possibility of one more position-player addition–a left fielder. Josh Willingham?

I don’tk now… they’ve got about 5 options for RF, with Revere and Span in LF and CF, so I think for the Twins to go get Willingham, and give up their #2 pick in the 2nd round, one of those two may have to be traded… which could happen.

Would that jack up the Twins’ disaffected fans, or what?

Great move. Had to be made with the health questions about Mauer & Morneau. That said, this guy is the catching position insurance for the instances when Mauer is the DH and someone else catches. It will allow pinch hitting & pinch running for the catcher without the loss of the DH. They still need a quality back-up catcher, Butera just doesn’t hit well enough to be a Major League player – and either trade or move him off the 40 man roster.

I’m a fan, and I think catcher defense is about the most over rated thing in all of sports, so I hope he’s the backup catcher with Butera in the minors where he belongs.

Since Doumit is most effective from the left side – check his stats – this effectively ends Kubel’s time with the Twins. Doumit is the same age, can be used at OF, 1B and DH AND can play Catcher. And he does it all for cheaper than what Kubel would have cost – if in fact, he would have even given serious consideration to returning to the Twins. With the other positions he plays, the Twins still need a back-up catcher who can generate offense and can be had on the cheap. Time to undo a Smith trade and sign Jose Morales as a free agent.

Would be fun to get him back. But if are going to have a third catcher I thought the consensus was he had to solid defensively.

I also think Doumit is a much-needed signing. With either Kubel or Cuddyer (or both) gone, Doumit can expect a lot of at-bats in the 2012 Twins lineup – even if Mauer ends up playing a majority of the season. Being a switch-hitter doesn’t hurt Doumit, either.

I’m hoping this has some affect on the Twins negotiations with Josh Willingham, too, as I read that he and Doumit had the same agent.

GBTR – God bless Terry Ryan.

Whats so great about this signing? The Twins needed a catcher that would replace Butera, this guy doesn’t do it!
